Radar RA(dio) D(etection) A(nd) R(anging)

Sir Robert Watson-Watt – He founded the technology that helped win the Battle of Britain, and was knighted for it in 1942 – but outside of his birthplace in Brechin, Scotland, few people today know his name.

Radar was developed during WWII to detect enemy planes and its now used to monitor todays aircraft, ships, spacecraft, missiles, motor vehicles, weather formations, and terrain.

It is told that Robert Watson-Watt was pulled over by a policeman with a speed gun in later years, and he said: ‘Had I known what you were going to do with it I would never have invented it!’.
